Karipot Small Longpi Cookware

$77

The Karipot can be pre-ordered here. This unique product is made in small batches, and as a result lead time is approx. 8-10 weeks.

The pot can be used widely on a range of heat sources, from the hob – both gas and electric – to the oven. The collection celebrates oven to table style eating, and is perfect for one-pot dishes. Ideal for slow cooking, but also for everyday meals.

The natural properties of the materials – stone and clay enhance the cooking experience, while preserving the ingredients’ oils and flavours. The burnishing process makes the cooking surface naturally non-stick. Once cooked, the pot also stays warmer for longer when on the table.

At each stage of the manufacturing process, we have created interventions that highlight the handmade aspect, while reducing the production time for the artisans. For example, introducing 3D printed moulds has allowed for greater detailing, sharper lines and precise forms. The contoured underside of the lid allows for excellent moisture retention and self-basting properties.

Best hand washed with a hard brush.

Water Tower 1 Mini-Planter

$90

As we started creating typologies of the water towers we came across in India, we found no two to be the same. Our response was to come up with three styles – which we called Watertower 1, 2 and 3 – that broadly reflected the forms or functions of the structures we came across most frequently. The functional and architectural features of these towers, such as the ladders, windows and stairs, have been turned into miniaturised decorative elements. Each design was 3D-printed, the moulds made out of silicone and the pieces cast in concrete.

Flyover Vase Vase

$103

Flyover vase was inspired by one of the many flyover pillars and other pieces of concrete infrastructure in Bangalore that have dominated the city’s landscape since the late 90s. We miniaturised the functional and architectural features of these structures, in this case the geometric ridges found on its sides, rendering them as decorative patterns and tactile elements. Each design was 3D-printed, moulds were then made out of silicone and the pieces were cast in concrete. Our Flyover Vase won a Wallpaper Design Award in 2019.

Once we had designed these jars, we struggled to find a craftsperson capable of doing the metal spinning by hand. Traditional methods aren’t being practiced widely anymore and many machines are now CNC-operated. We searched extensively and eventually found Venkatesh Chinappa, a man with over 25 years’ experience spinning metal on a manual machine.

Dakshin Scented Soy Candle

$85

We created a pair of fragrances called ‘Uttara’ and ‘Dakshin’ that translates from Kannada as ‘north’ and ‘south’. The inspiration behind these fragrances was capturing the strong contrasts that exist across India in terms of landscape, food, culture and much more. Dakshin represents a metaphorical ‘south’ and has a musky and deep scent, with notes of patchouli, oakmoss and tar. The Dakshin candle is set in a black anodized spun metal container with a grey soapstone stone lid.

Diya Cast Brass Candleholders

$65

‘Diya’ is our tribute to the small palm-sized terracotta oil lamps you can find all over India, but it also references the heaviness and elegance of South Indian brass oil lamps. These stackable candle-holders are made out of brass using a sand casting process and feel pleasingly heavy and smooth to the touch. Sold as a set of two. Flip the piece to use it a tea-light holder.

We are a product design studio based between Bangalore and London.

India fascinates and inspires us. We think that there is more to Indian design than just sticking an elephant on it, and that Indian craft has more to offer than simply repeating the past.

India can seem a pretty chaotic place. But sitting there, quietly are some really incredible, super functional designs. The “designers” of these objects if they can be found at all, aren’t celebrated in the same way as they are in other countries. Instead design is seen as a bi-product of living. This unassuming approach, with an emphasis on a quiet functionality, is what inspires and drives our creative process.

At Tiipoi, we tell positive and insightful stories of a real India, that is changing and shifting all the time. We don’t want to tell nostalgic stories of its past. We prefer to look at what is happening right now, and highlight India’s role in contemporary design.
