Crafted in Channapatna, India, using traditional wood lathe techniques passed down since the 18th century, the Tipu Salt Mill demonstrates fine artisanship layered with a contemporary flair. It is designed in collaboration with London based Moe Reddish. The craftsmen of this region renowned for their intricate, hand-carved, and lacquered children's toys, reflected in the charming design of this kitchen essential.
Made with locally sourced Hale Maara (ivory wood), each piece is turned on a lathe to achieve the desired form. Lac, a natural resin, is then pressed onto the wood while the heat and friction from the lathe melts the lac, allowing it to adhere beautifully. The glossy orange and yellow finish is derived naturally from turmeric, Manjista and indigo then polished with screw pine, a locally found fibrous leaf to achieve a glossy finish. The mill with its circular handle and its ceramic crush grind mechanism enables one to adjust the coarseness of the salt / pepper grain.

Your cookware must be seasoned prior to use. Seasoning is the process of treating the surface of a cooking vessel to produce a resistant and non-stick cooking surface. To season, add 3-4 table spoons of walnut oil or flax seed oil and rub onto the inside surface of the cookware with a paper towel. Allow it to soak in for 15 minutes and remove any excess.
Preheat oven to max (230-240 or gas mark 8/9) and place your cookware in the oven for 60 minutes. Once complete, turn off your oven and allow your cookware to cool to room temperature before taking it out.Your cookware is now seasoned and ready to use. For the first few uses we recommend using extra oil and always starting on a low flame. Also make sure your cookware is not left empty on a flame as this may cause it to crack.
