TIPU Pepper Mill
pepper mill
Crafted in Channapatna, India, using traditional wood lathe techniques passed down from the 18th century, the Tipu Pepper Mill celebrates fine artisanship with a contemporary flair. Designed in collaboration with London-based artist and designer Moe Redish, the piece draws inspiration from the town’s famous handcrafted toys known for their rounded forms and vibrant lacquer finishes.
Made with locally sourced Hale Maara (Ivory Wood), each Pepper Mill is turned on a lathe to achieve its sculptural form. A natural resin called lac is applied over a hot charcoal flame, where the heat and friction of the lathe melt it into the wood, creating a smooth, lustrous surface.
The deep orange and yellow hues are naturally derived from turmeric (yellow), manjistha (red), indigo (blue) and kanchi kum kum (orange), then hand-polished with screw pine, a locally found fibrous leaf, for a glossy finish.
The mill features a ceramic crush-grind mechanism and a circular handle, allowing you to adjust the coarseness of your pepper with ease. Each piece is made within Channapatna’s historic closed-loop craft ecosystem, where every stage, from wood sourcing to polishing, is handled sustainably by local artisans.

Your cookware must be seasoned prior to use. Seasoning is the process of treating the surface of a cooking vessel to produce a resistant and non-stick cooking surface. To season, add 3-4 table spoons of walnut oil or flax seed oil and rub onto the inside surface of the cookware with a paper towel. Allow it to soak in for 15 minutes and remove any excess.
Preheat oven to max (230-240 or gas mark 8/9) and place your cookware in the oven for 60 minutes. Once complete, turn off your oven and allow your cookware to cool to room temperature before taking it out.Your cookware is now seasoned and ready to use. For the first few uses we recommend using extra oil and always starting on a low flame. Also make sure your cookware is not left empty on a flame as this may cause it to crack.
